Profile
a Sussex based, three-piece ceilidh band bringing flair and energy to Irish and Scots traditional music.
We work with professional callers for ceilidhs / barn dances. Our dances are especially good for beginners as everyone is included - children too - with clear, friendly instructions to make sure nobody gets left behind!
We take bookings for birthdays, weddings and general celebrations and can travel throughout East and West Sussex for ceilidhs.
We have a large, 750 watt PA and can cover a large venue with ease - (up to 100 people is maximum for our system).
The band are:
Oli Alex - whistle/flute:
Melanie Davies - violin/mandola:
Jim Richards - guitar (DADGAD tuning)
Oli has been playing flute since he was 8 yrs old originally learning classical music. Later he moved into folk music specialising in Trad Irish as well as some English and Scottish. He plays Low whistle, penny whistles, wooden Irish flute and the Boehm concert flute. He`s played with various bands in the area including the Irish party band Shenanigan.
Melanie has played violin since she was 8. She has learned Irish fiddle from Martin Hayes, Keven Burke and Dermot McLaughlin. She also plays mandola. She has played in ceilidh bands for 15 years and has taught violin for over 10 years
Jim has considerable experience of playing Irish music across Sussex and beyond in ceilidhs, sessions and folk festivals. Jim enjoys a good reputation in Sussex for his sensitive and characterful guitar playing. His harmonic approach is unique and adds a rare, rich quality to the music he accompanies. Jim also plays bodhran (Irish drum) to competition level.
